Clint mumbled something but Kate was too busy staring at the bed to make heads or tails of what he said. It was a lot smaller than she'd imagined. In her head, the bed had been a king, maybe a queen. This was one of those beds that were labeled "full-sized" yet were anything but. There was no way they'd be able to share this without touching. "What did you say?" Kate asked.
Clint shook his head. "I said, how would that even work?"
"Um..."
"The sharing the bed thing," Clint clarified.
Kate flipped her hair over her shoulder. "We both get into the bed and we go to sleep. Easy peasy," Kate said with a hell of a lot more confidence than she was feeling.
Clint scratched his head. "Do you really think that's such a good idea?"
"Dude, this is the mission. We're supposed to be married. Married people sleep in the same bed. At the same time." Kate shook her head. "You've been married, shouldn't you know that?"
"Don't get cheeky with me." Clint pressed his hand down on the mattress as if he was checking the firmness or something.
Kate stuck her tongue out at him because she was super mature like that.
"Maybe we should keep our clothes on," Clint suggested.
"I wasn't planning on getting in the bed naked." Kate rolled her eyes.
Clint shook his head. "That's not what I meant."
She knew what he meant but it was just too much fun messing with him. "I brought a nightshirt and shorts to sleep in. What did you bring?"
"I've got pajama bottoms and a t-shirt," Clint said.
"That should be fine, unless you think that you're so irresistible that I'm not going to be able to keep myself from having my dirty, dirty way with you."
"Er...there's no right answer here, is there?"
There really wasn't but she decided to keep her mouth shut about it. Kate yawned. It had been a long day and night hobnobbing with the rich and evil. "Just get in your pajamas and get into bed, okay? I'm way too exhausted to ravish you while you sleep. So, you have nothing to worry about."
Shifting in bed for the umpteenth time, Kate wondered how she could have been so foolish. Was Clint asleep? It had been at least an hour and despite being exhausted, Kate still couldn't fall asleep. She'd never been quite so aware of Clint's body. Every shift, every nudge, everything -- was magnified. In the dark, under the covers with her fingers accidentally brushing against his thigh yet again, she considered getting out of the bed and sleeping on the floor, or in the tub, or anywhere but here. It was so much harder to ignore her feelings for him when he was lying so close.
She nudged him and nothing happened. He wasn't snoring or anything, but she was pretty sure he hadn't had any trouble falling asleep. If he was really asleep, maybe she should stop freaking out every time her skin brushed against his, and just relax? Kate let herself stretch out just a little bit, so that her leg was pressed up against his and her fingers were only one small step from being entwined with his own. She must have fallen asleep at some point because the next thing she knew the shower was running and she was alone in the bed.
"You okay there, Hawkeye? You look -"
Kate glared at him. "Think very carefully before you finish that sentence."
"Tired?"
She stared at her reflection in the mirror. "I'll concede to that." She pulled her wet hair back in a loose bun and turned to look at Clint. He looked a bit worn-out there himself. Maybe he hadn't slept as well as she thought he had. Maybe he had some unresolved feelings of his own to contend with?
"Rough night? Sharing a bed not everything you hoped it'd be?" Clint asked.
Kate narrowed her eyes at him and pushed him out of the bathroom so she could finish getting ready. She shut the door but it didn't keep out the sound of his voice.
"Maybe next time we should just have sex and get it over with."
Kate whipped the door open. "Excuse me?"
Clint looked down at the floor and cleared his throat. "I said, next time w should spring for the king-sized bed."
"That's not what you said the first time." Kate knew what she heard.
"Then why did you even ask?"
Kate sighed, shook her head, and shut the door in his face. It wasn't the worst idea he'd had.
