A loose thread on a frayed shirt draws her fingers close. Distraction. "There's a thread-" Kate tries to explain.
Yelena turns, a smile playing on her lips. Another distraction.
"You don't need an excuse to touch me," Yelena teases.
Kate lets go of the thread, unsure of what to do with her hand. "I like the shirt."
Yelena raises an eyebrow at the change of subject. "It's one of my favorites as you can tell from the fraying." They were almost touching now. "It's so soft, feel." Yelena takes Kate's hand and brushes it along her shirt.
It is soft but Kate's more distracted by how close they're standing and the way her hand is in Yelena's.
Yelena let go. "It's a shame, really. By the time a piece of clothing gets that ultimate softness, it's already beginning to fall apart."
Kate swallows. "Is there a moral to this story?"
"A moral? From me? No." Yelena laughs. Kate loves her laugh. "The point is that nothing lasts forever in this world. We must grasp what we can while it's still in front of us."
"Is that right?"
"Yes." Yelena's lips touch Kate's and all of her doubts and second-guessing unravel.
